Obituary

John M. Potvin, 71, passed away at home on Saturday August 18th after a battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.

John was born on April 14th, 1947, to Arthur and Laura (Maynard) Potvin in Willimantic, CT. John leaves his loving mother Laura; his son Joseph and wife Amy, and their children Matthew, Emma, and Sean of Trumbull CT; his daughter, Jessica Matthes and husband Scott, and their daughters Avery and Audrey Reese of Scottsdale, AZ. He also leaves his siblings, brothers William, Andrew, and Chuck of Willimantic; and sisters Victoria Usher of New Hartford and Katherine Potvin of East Hampton. He was preceded in death by his father, Arthur Potvin.

After graduating Windham High School, John attended The University of Connecticut’s School of Business where he received his degree in 1970. After graduating, he joined his father and three brothers in helping run Hosmer Mountain Bottling Company, the family business.

A reflection of John’s life would not be complete without noting the importance of the A.A. program to him. He celebrated 35 years of sobriety and devoted much of his life to helping others in the program. He was well known and well respected within the A.A. community. John truly lived the virtues of selflessness and humility that are the cornerstones of the fellowship.

As a boy and young man John was a good athlete, starring as “Little Pots,” on several Little League championship teams as a left-handed short stop. He was a point guard on St. Mary’s basketball team and played for Windham High School boys’ basketball. He was once written up in a high school sports magazine for his “pure jump shot.” As an adult he also enjoyed many years of duckpin bowling in different leagues. Sports were a passion for John and he religiously followed the Boston Red Sox and the UCONN Huskies.

John had many friends and was known for his quick wit, funny nicknames, and caring nature. Everyone who knew John, and especially his family, will miss him dearly. His sense of humor and kind heart will not be forgotten.

The family will receive relatives and friends Wednesday August 22nd at Potter Funeral Home, 456 Jackson St., (Rte. 195) Willimantic, CT from 5:00 to 7:00, there will be no additional services.
