Obituary

Nancy Jane (Hopkins) Smith joined her Lord and Savior in Heaven on Sunday, September 6, 2020, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born on March 21, 1947, in Willimantic, Connecticut, Nancy grew up in Willimantic where she attended school and made lifelong friends. Nancy met her husband and soul mate, Bruce, while a student at Windham High School. High school sweethearts, they married in 1969 and celebrated 51 years of marriage this past May.

After high school, Nancy attended dental school and worked as a dental assistant for 30 years. Upon retiring, she continued working to serve others with grace as a private caregiver, as well as working at the Card Home for the Aged.

A vibrant and active member of her church, Nancy was a true evangelist, sharing her love for the Lord with everyone she met. Her unwavering faith was an inspiration to all who knew her. Her light shone, even during her darkest days.

Nancy saw God’s beauty in nature everywhere. She loved spending time with family at Lord’s Point Beach, flower gardening, and enjoyed decorating her home to reflect the seasons. Her beloved camp in Maine is where you could find her enjoying a walk with Bruce and their dog, Milo or contentedly listening to the call of the loons and watching the sunset from the deck with a cup of tea.

She loved her family heart and soul. Nancy is survived by her loving husband, Bruce, and two sons she adored, Chad and wife Cyndi, and Robert and wife Jamie. She will be remembered fondly as “Meme” by her four grandsons: Lane, Preston, Sawyer, and Dominic, all of whom meant the world to her. She was predeceased by her parents, Robert and Marguerite Hopkins, and her brother, Robert Hopkins. Nancy loved his daughters, Jennifer and Dana, who will miss her dearly. Some of Nancy’s fondest memories revolve around being the only granddaughter out of 14 grandchildren. The Hopkins cousins will miss the close bond they continued to share throughout the years.

The family would like to thank all the neighbors and friends who came to visit and help care for Nancy during these last few months. Their kindness, compassion, and love for Nancy will never be forgotten.

In lieu of sending flowers, we ask that you consider sending a bouquet to someone you love as a joyful reminder of Nancy’s love of flowers and God’s grace.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00am on Thursday, September 17,2020 at Cider Mill Fellowship Church. Family will be greeting friends from 10AM until the celebration of life. Due to Covid-19 restrictions an online viewing of the service will be an available option on the Cider Mill Christian Fellowship Facebook page.
