Fate of the ‘Old School’ …

Windham High School

The reference to ‘Old School’ is a term that is sometimes applied to the Windham High School that we attended. When a new Windham High School was built in 1971, the old WHS was converted to a middle school, Kramer Middle School (KMS). Twenty-three or so years ago, a new KMS was built. At that time, the old WHS/KMS building, now referred to as the Kramer building, was re-purposed for use, and is still in use, as the Windham Public School District Administrative Offices and the Windham Early Childhood Center.

During a November 7, 2017 referendum, taxpayers went to the polls. On November 8, 2017, the Willimantic Chronicle reports: “…voters said “yes” to the $112.3 million Windham High School renovation project that will upgrade the high school like new. The vote tally was 1,418-1,292. The building project will allow the Windham School System to move central offices to WHS in addition to the Windham Early Childhood Center.”

The referendum proposed selling the old school. Upon inquiry regarding the fate of the old school, a source within Windham Public Schools said, “Yes the town just passed funding to do a renovation of the existing High School and we have been ordered to vacate the Kramer building by August 1, 2018. I am not sure who the buyer will be, but it is expected that all, or at minimum the school portion of the building, will be demolished. There is a possibility that the Gym wing may be saved and reused. If you or a member of your group would like access for last chance photos or a walk around, please let me know, and I am sure I can get them access.”
