Herb Arico, born Herbert Charles Arico on June 30, 1922 in Waltham, Massachusetts, will be celebrating his 100th birthday on June 30 2022. Herb taught business classes at Windham High School for many years including the years that we were there. Herb was the Windham High School Faculty Advisor for our Class of 1965. Herb was born in 1922 to Giuseppe Francesco (Joseph Francis) Arico who was born 1898 in Saponara, Sicily, Italy. Herb’s father Giuseppe emigrated to the US in 1901, traveling with Herb’s grandmother. Herb’s father Giuseppe first starting working as a chauffer, then as a mechanic, and grocery store clerk, ending his career as a fireman in the town of Belmont, MA after 45 years of service. Herb’s mother, Ruby M. Pritchard, was born 1898 in Fulham, London, England. Ruby emigrated to Prince Edward Island, Canada as a teenager, entering Boston, MA in 1903 with her parents and infant brother. Herbert was “sandwiched” between 2 brothers, Joseph and Kenneth.

Herb attended and graduated in 1940 from Belmont High School in Belmont, Massachusetts, a town adjacent to Waltham, the town he was born in. Belmont is a town in the western suburbs of Boston, Massachusetts. After graduating from Belmont High School, Herb attended Northeastern University in Boston and served in the US Army. Herb enlisted in the Army in 1942 and served through 1946 as a technician. (Read about Herb’s military service HERE). After graduating from Northeastern, Herb attended and graduated from Boston University and joined the faculty at Watertown High School in Massachusetts.

Business Teacher. Herb married Lucille Cavar at Saint Phillips Church in Ashford, CT in 1967. Herb and Lucille have 2 children, Britton, and York and 9 grandchildren. Herb retired from Windham High School in 2010 after 58 years of service!

While at Windham High, Herb taught Business Math, Economics, Geography, Business English, Typewriting I and II. Accounting I and II, Computers I, Advanced Computer Programming, and General Business. In addition to being the WHS Senior Class Advisor for 35 years, Herb also was the faculty advisor for the Business Education Club, the Future Business Leaders of America, the WHS Cheerleaders and was the Junior Class Advisor. Herb coached : Tennis, Golf, started the Girls Soccer Program at WHS, and coached Community Pee Wee Basketball.

In addition to teaching and coaching at Windham High, Herb was, and continues to be, a very active member of many Boards and Commissions, including the EastConn Board of Directors and the Willington Board of Education. Herb also was involved in scouting, leading both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts Troops.
